Maarten Baas is one of the leading figures in Dutch design.

With his experimental and controversial work, Maarten Baas is turning preconceived ideas upside down. He has forged his own universe, joyfully pushing the boundaries of design to show another reality made of strangeness, optical effects, illusion and play.    

Baas redefined the traditional outdoor furniture of metal frames and wooden slats by drawing the slats in pencil on paper and then meticulously recreating them in reality using aluminium. In a quick sketch you often find beauty, he says.  
But these spontaneous lines are often lost in an industrial process.
So Maarten Baas adds organic forms and irregular lines to a very straight design world.  
The result is a design that looks like it was drawn by a child...The powder-coated aluminium slats have slightly irregular and asymmetrical lines, deliberately imperfect.  
This playful and naive spirit is further enhanced by the small armrests that point forward, seemingly reaching out to you and giving the seats a charismatic look.
